SECTION SIX

ARCHANGELS

In the Old Testament only one angel, Michael, is described as "an Archangel," but in The Book of Enoch, there are many archangels described.  In Jude 1:9, Michael is described as an archangel. Jude 1:9  "But even the Archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil Satan over the body of Moses, did not bring a slanderous accusation against him but said, 'The Lord rebuke you!' " NIV

Although Michael is the only Archangel mentioned in the Bible, there are other scriptures that indicate that there could be more than one Archangel, such as Daniel 10:13-14 where Gabriel says,  "The Prince of the Persian Kingdom" resisted me 21 days. Then Michael,
ONE of the Chief Princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the King of Persia."  NIV

Since we know Michael is an Archangel and is called, "ONE of the Chief Princes," we can only surmise that "Chief Princes" is another name God gives to Archangels.

In Chapter 21:3-4 Enoch identifies Gabriel as being an Archangel. "3 And I remained alone at the end of the seventh heaven and became afraid, and fell on my face and said to myself: Woe is me, what has befallen me?

4 And the Lord sent one of his glorious ones, the archangel (4) Gabriel, and he said to me: Have courage, Enoch, do not fear, arise before the Lord's face into eternity, arise, come with me."

The four possible types of Angels mentioned in the preceding verses.

1.  Gabriel........................................................An Archangel
2.
Michael.
......................................................An Archangel
3.
The Prince of the Persian Kingdom.
................A fallen angel probably an Archangel
4.
The King of Persia.
.......................................A fallen angel probably a Cherub Angel

The preceding scripture calls Michael, One of the Chief Princes, which leaves no doubt that there are in fact, other Archangels.

Remember, when Lucifer rebelled, I believe one or more of the Archangels rebelled with him and are now serving in Satan's army. So, it is entirely possible that the Prince of the Persian Kingdom could very well be an Archangel, which explains why Gabriel needed the help of another Archangel to defeat him. The King of Persia also referred to in this scripture is probably a Cherub and Satan's second-in-command - whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REGULAR ANGELS - THE ANGEL OF THE LORD AND THE ANGEL OF GOD

All Angels are "Ministering Spirits," while The Angel of the Lord and The Angel of God are neither actual Angels, but are both the person of Jesus Christ in the form of an Angel when He appeared before different men and women on earth in the Old Testament.

Many times, Jesus appeared to man in the form of The Angel of the Lord or The Angel of God when He had a message to deliver or a job to do that only He could accomplish.

Matthew 1:24-25 is the last time The Angel of the Lord or The Angel of God appeared to man in the Bible by the title "The Angel of the Lord" with the possible exception of when Jesus appeared to Paul on the Road to Damascus.

Matthew 1:24-25  "When Joseph awoke, he did what The Angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife, but he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he Joseph gave him the name Jesus."  NIV

Acts 9: 4-6  speaking of Saul also called Paul, "He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? ' ''Who are you, Lord?' Saul asked. 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,' He replied."  6 "Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do."  NIV

EXAMPLES OF JESUS APPEARING AS - THE ANGEL OF THE LORD.

EXAMPLE  1. Of Jesus appearing as the Angel of the Lord

In Genesis 22:1-12 God tests Abraham. "Abraham, take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah and sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about."

"When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it.  After he bound Isaac, he laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But The Angel of the LORD called out to him from Heaven, 'Do not lay a hand on the boy,' God said. 'Now I know that you fear God because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.' " NIV

NOTE: In the preceding scripture, the first verse denotes The Angel of the Lord as speaking to Abraham, but in the second verse, the scriptures reveal that The Angel of the Lord is actually God who is speaking, verifying they are one in the same.

EXAMPLE  2.  Of Jesus appearing as the Angel of the Lord

Exodus 3:1-6  "Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There, The Angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire, it did not burn up. So Moses thought, 'I will go over and see this strange sight--why the bush does not burn up.'"

"When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, 'Moses! Moses!' And Moses said, 'Here I am.'  'Do not come any closer,' God said. 'Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.' Then He said, 'I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.' At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God."  NIV

Here again as He did in Genesis, God speaks to Moses as The Angel of the Lord, after which He proclaims Himself to be GOD. Again, verifying that The Angel of the Lord and God are one in the same.

EXAMPLE  3.  Of Jesus appearing as the Angel of the Lord

Judges 6:11-12 "The Angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. When The Angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, He said, 'The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.' " NIV

EXAMPLE  4.  Of Jesus appearing as the Angel of the Lord

Exodus 14:19-22 "Then The Angel of God, who had been traveling in front of the Israelites' army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night, the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side so neither went near the other all night long. Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night, the LORD drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left." NIV

EXAMPLE  5.  Of JESUS APPEARING AS - THE ANGEL OF GOD.

Genesis 21:14-19  "Early the next morning, Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.  When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes. Then she went off and sat down nearby, about a bow shot away, for she thought, "I cannot watch the boy die." And as she sat there nearby, she began to sob."

"God heard the boy crying, and The Angel of God called to Hagar from Heaven and said to her, 'What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.' Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water, so she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink." NIV

In the preceding verse, "The Angel of God, appeared to Hagar and said, 'I will make him into a great nation.' " Only God has the power to see the future and cause something that is not, to become.

EXAMPLE  6.  Of Jesus appearing as the Angel of God

Genesis 31:10-13  "Jacob describes a dream the Lord had given him.  'In breeding season, I once had a dream in which I looked up and saw that the male goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled, or spotted.  The Angel of God said to me in the dream, 'Jacob.' I answered, 'Here I am.' And he said, 'Look up and see that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled or spotted, for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.  I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar and where you made a vow to me. Now leave this land at once and go back to your native land.' "  NIV

EXAMPLE  7.  Of Jesus appearing as The Angel of God and The Angel of the Lord

Judges 6:20-24 "The Angel of God said to him Gideon, 'Take the meat and the unleavened bread, place them on this rock, and pour out the broth.' " And Gideon did so."  21 "With the tip of the staff that was in His hand, The Angel of the LORD touched the meat and the unleavened bread. Fire flared from the rock, consuming the meat and the bread. And The Angel of the LORD disappeared." 22 "When Gideon realized that it was The Angel of the LORD, he exclaimed, 'Ah, Sovereign LORD! I have seen The Angel of the LORD face-to-face!' "  23  "But the LORD said to him,  'Peace! Do not be afraid, you are not going to die.' "  24  "So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD is Peace. To this day, it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites."  NIV

WHICH DID GOD JESUS CREATE FIRST - THE EARTH OR THE ANGELS

In Colossians 1:15-18 "Paul the apostle speaking of Jesus said,  'He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him, all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him, all things hold together.' "  NIV

Now that we have further established that Jesus created all things, the question arises which did God create first, the earth or the angels. To find the answer, we must look to the Book of Job. In the Book of Job 38:4-7 God asks Job, "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone while the morning stars sang together and All the Angels shouted for joy?" NIV

In this verse, God leaves no doubt that He Jesus created the Angels before He created the earth. That means Lucifer could not have rebelled against God and been cast out of Heaven the first time until after God created the earth, because the scripture clearly sets forth that all the Angels shouted for joy.  If all the angels shouted for joy-and since Lucifer is an angel-he had to be included as still serving God at the time God created the earth.

NEPHILIM - HALF-FALLEN ANGEL-AND-HALF MAN

Nephilim in the Hebrew means the fallen ones and in the Greek, earth-born, and also giant. In the Book of Genesis, Moses describes these incredible beings. They were giants, half man-and-half angel and were the children of the fallen angels who rebelled with Satan marrying the daughters of men.

Genesis 6:1-4  "When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God bena Elohim, angels saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose."

"The Nephilim were on the earth in those days -- and also afterward -- when the sons of God bena Elohim, angels went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown."  NIV

In Verse 4 we are told, that the Nephilim were on the earth in those days and also after those days. After the flood. This verse answers the question as to who the giants were that inhabited the Land of Israel after Moses died, and Joshua led the Israelites into Israel also called the Promise Land. The real question is: When God destroyed the earth with Noah's Flood and killed everyone on the earth, except Noah, his wife, his three sons and the wives of the three sons, where did the Nephilim come from that lived in the Land of Israel after the flood. The answer will probably surprise you! We will cover the Nephilim in more detail in a later chapter.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MAN'S SIN AND THE ANGELS' REBELLION

Knowing the end from the beginning, when God created the angels, He knew that one-third of the angels would rebel against Him. Yet, He made no provision for their redemption if they sinned by rebelling against Him and later wanted His forgiveness. The penalty for an angel rebelling against God is the Lake of Fire in outer darkness for all eternity.

Unlike angels, when God made man, also knowing that man too would sin and be separated from Him, God made a provision that man might be redeemed for their sins.

1.  From Adam to the death of Jesus the Christ, God's provision for the forgiveness of sin was accomplished through animal sacrifice, but this only covered sin. It was not until the Crucifixion of Jesus and the shedding of His Blood that man's sins could be forgiven and washed away.

2.  God sent His Son Jesus Christ, to die on the cross in our place for our sins, that through the death of Jesus, we might receive forgiveness for our sins and have eternal life.

In the Book of Jude, God's Word tells us that the angels who rebelled and kept not their first abode, but married the daughters of men, were placed into everlasting chains under darkness in a place called "the Pit," which is located in the center of the earth.

Jude 6  "And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home-these He has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the Great Day."  NIV

What these verses are telling us is that there is no redemption for the angels who sinned. The only redemption created by God was the redemption of man's sins through the Blood of Jesus Christ. So when the fallen angels married the daughters of man and had children who were half angel-and-half man, because the children were half man-and-half angel, they like their fathers had no means of redemption for the sins they committed. Consequently, after they died, they too were condemned, and became the demons spoken of throughout the Bible. But the mystery does not stop here, even though the original Nephilim were all killed in the Flood of Noah, their offspring reappeared in the Land of Israel during the time Joshua led the Israelites across the Jordan into Israel. We will cover the fate of the Nephilim in more detail in a later chapter.

PRINCIPALITIES - POWERS - AND THE RULERS OF DARKNESS - WHO ARE THEY

The Bible does not tell us how many of Satan's fallen angels took human wives, but we know that not all did because Ephesians 6:12 tells us that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age and against spiritual hosts of the wicked in heavenly places.

The principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness, spiritual hosts and the wicked in heavenly places are the other fallen angels of Satan who did not take the daughters of man as wives. We know this because demons are earthbound. As a rule, only God's Angels and Satan's fallen angels have or have ever had access into the second and third heavens. The exception to this rule is when God calls one of the redeemed up into heaven in a dream or in a vision. The only two men who never suffered death and were taken up into heaven were Enoch and Elijah.
The Nephilim, the children of the fallen angels, and their children to the third generation are earthbound and are the demons in the world today.

DEMONS ARE NOT FALLEN ANGELS

Paul, in the Book of Romans and in the Gospel of Matthew, put to rest the question that angels and demons are one in the same. Paul writes in Romans 8:37-39, "Know in all these things, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.  For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither Angels nor Demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus Our Lord."  NIV

Notice in the previous paragraph that Paul separated the two (angels and demons) as two different spirits.
